Connecting With Your Child Using Astrology

Most parents begin to “read” their child at birth.  Parenthood doesn’t come with a guidebook so when You bring home your little one (whether they are your first or 3rd, every child is different…. what works for one might not be what works for another. … and it is a form of trial and error.

This is where you can use astrology to help.  Knowing this, we need to acknowledge that there are environmental factors, decisions made by You the parent, education, and free-that will alter or change the prophecy foreseen in their chart.  Knowing that…The birth chart is a blueprint of what can be. And as always…remember that Astrology is meant to confirm not replace the inner guide.

As astrologers, we want to know what zodiac sign is rising at the time of the child’s birth. This is because the Rising Sign gives us a picture of the way we appear or are seen by others.  We look at the world through the vision of the Rising Sign.  Therefore, your child’s Rising Sign will offer clues as to how your child perceives themselves or would like others to see them.  Many astrologers consider the Rising Sign as important as the Sun Sign in describing identity, because the Ascendant, also known as the Rising Sign, describes their early childhood experience.

By using your child’s natal birth chart, it can tell you a lot about how to support and interact with them so that you both get the best out of your relationship!

I also advocate combining the charts using a synastry reading, so you know where you will have ease and grace and where you may possibly butt heads.

So, let’s take a look at each sign:

Aries

Aries is a fire sign that is ruled by the planet Mars. It is the first sign of the zodiac.  Aries rules the head and face (which can make them “hardheaded”) and their temperament can be quick and hot. Aries will get along best with all fire signs, which include Leo and Sagittarius. Libra is the opposite sign, which means that this sign has the potential to bring out the very best or possibly the very worst of the ram. The most challenging relationships are probably going to be with Scorpio or Virgos.

Aries children will tend to be demanding of attention.  Since they will want to be the first at everything and the leader, you may have a hard time convincing them that they are not the boss of you =). Being the first sign in the zodiac makes them bold, brash and adventurous, which will keep many a parent on their toes in the early years! Behavior modification or discipline is not something that comes easily to Aries children. They usually have to make mistakes and learn things on their own, often the hard way.

These children will melt your heart with their hugs and cuddles. They are fast with a temper and can be quick to heat up and explode… but they are also quick to get over anger. They share with ease and grace but are not pushovers. They love to rise up to a challenge, so if you want to get them to do something, make it a game, race or competition. The more fun and ambitious the task, the more likely they will participate in it with no push back to you.

Aries children are very imaginative and creative with a kind, and gentle heart.  They will be in need of constant reassurance that they are loved, valued and accepted. They in turn will treat others the same way, too, with love, compassion and understanding… unless they are crossed.

They are not born particularly reasonable, nor overly responsible, but they can be taught to learn both of these traits. Look to blending their headstrong adventurous attitude with practicality to ensure success as they grow and mature.

Taurus

Taurus is an earth sign that is ruled by the planet Venus. It is the second sign of the zodiac, and it rules the neck and throat. Taurus is most compatible with the earth signs of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Scorpio is its opposite sign in the zodiac, which means that this sign has the potential to bring out the very best or possibly the very worst of the bull. The most difficult relationships are likely to be with Libra and Sagittarius.

Taurus children practically wrote the book on how to be stubborn. Remember that Taurus is “The Bull”.  Slow to rouse and slow and steady in action, preferring stability. The more you try to make them do something that they don’t want to do, the more they dig their heels in. They are extremely charming children at heart. Your job at a parent will to be to find new ways to motivate them to get them to do what you want them to do.

These children respond well to all types of affection including hugs and cuddles.  Use caution when holding this comfort back from them as a form of discipline, or you can break their spirit. These children are very capable, practical and methodical in their actions and movements. They are in touch with their thoughts and feelings, and usually wear their heart on their sleeves. Even the most reserved Taurus child will let you know how they are feeling.

Taurus children are not impulsive but are slow and steady and tend to exercise caution. You may have to coax them out of their comfort zones in order to get them to experience new things. Be careful when doing this…as they do not like to be the center of attention.

Taurus children will not be easily pushed or bullied.  They appreciate kindness, sensitivity, good manners and practicality. They need caring and gentle handling, as all children do, but perhaps even more so due to their nature being gentle, refined and sincere. Calm your child with soothing words, music and soft colors.

Most Taurus children appreciate learning and are quite creative in how they do so. They enjoy reading, love all the forms arts, and have the ability to concentrate and really take in what they are studying. Let them learn at their own pace, and don not push them, or you’ll create a confrontation where they will dig their heels in.  Use positive words as reinforcement, reasonable rewards, and lots of hugs, kisses and cuddles. They really want to please you.

Gemini

Gemini is an air sign that is ruled by the planet Mercury- which also rules Virgo.  This blend of earth and air combined has beautiful potential. Gemini is the 3rd sign of the zodiac and rules our arms and lungs.  As an air sign it will get along best with all air signs…Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Sagittarius is its opposite sign in the zodiac, which means that this sign has the capability to bring out the very best or possibly the very worst of the twins. The most challenging relationships are most likely with Scorpio and Capricorn.

With a Gemini child, it is like you have two kids rolled into one…remember this is the sign of the twins. Gemini children are active, curious, animated, and definitely impatient.  It is as if they are fueled by batteries and always on the move…. like the Energizer Bunny. Gemini children struggle if they are restricted or confined in any way. If they feel limited in any way, they will be whiny and cranky…making everyone around them miserable.

Gemini children need to be kept occupied all they time, otherwise they find trouble.  They are good at multitasking and tend to do everything from talking to creating…at a fast pace. They are social butterflies that are intelligent, curious, and outgoing. They crave connection with others and need to share their thoughts ideas all through play.

Gemini children have creative and vivid imaginations, therefore the line between fact and fantasy can be blurry.  You will need to understand what they are sharing from their point of view…their vision.

Gemini children will need to learn from an early age how to allow others to speak and finish their thoughts…to not interrupt.  This is not because they are rude, but because they are so mercurial that they have probably already worked out the rest of the story or solution in their head and are ready to move onto the next topic of conversation.

To keep your Gemini’s mind active, introduce them to technology early. All types of gaming and toys that will allow them to use their minds at their speed. Communication is vital to Geminis, and they love being able to be in touch with everyone, or to find out information quickly and accurately. These kiddos are bright, intelligent, vivacious, and unstoppable. They just need some gentle guidance as to how to best use their gifts and talents to best.

Cancer

Cancer is a water sign that is ruled by the luminary Moon. Cancer is the 4th sign of the zodiac and rules the stomach and breasts.  Cancer kiddos get along best with the other Cancers and the other water signs, which are Scorpio and Pisces. Capricorn is the opposite to Cancer, which means that this sign has the potential to bring out the very best or possibly the very worst of the crab. The most trying relationships for Cancers are probably with Sagittarius and Aquarius.

Cancer children flow freely from one mood to the other depending on the phase of the moon. They are very sensitive and wear their heart on their sleeves. When younger, they cannot hide their emotions, so you always know how they feel. They love the water, so bath time will be a fun activity.

These children will need extra reassurance, TLC, and extra emotional support in order to know that they are loved, valued and appreciated. They love their mamma and may be extra attached to their parents. They will not ask you for your attention. You will need to make sure that you give them the attention that they crave, need and desire willingly and unconditionally for them to feel safe.  It will cut them to the core, if you hold back your hugs, kisses and affection from them. Encourage them to explore their environment and get involved in activities. Gently nudge them to join groups and events.

Cancer kiddos have very vivid imaginations and can play alone for hours. I would not disregard all of their imagination of pretend friends as not being true. Each of the water signs are very empathic, often to the point of psychic. You may find that they are even talking to people who are not there. Tune in and listen carefully to what they are saying for a clue as to who they are speaking to. They may be speaking to family members or others that have passed on from this lifetime.

Regarding discipline and little crabs, Cancer children have an all new and different tolerance level. They can be very stubborn. Often, there can be no budging them when their mind is made up. When discipline is needed, choose logic over harsh punishments or strict rules that would hurt their gentle spirit.  They are generally mothering and natural caregivers often caring for their dolls, stuffed animals and pets. And food is a favorite thing for them. Use caution that they do not become emotional eaters, putting things into their mouths when they are upset or anxious.

Leo

Leo is a fire sign, and is ruled by the luminary Sun. It is the 5th sign of the zodiac and rules the heart and back. It’s the most compatible with Leo, Sagittarius and Aries. Aquarius is the lion’s opposite, which means that this sign has the potential to bring out the very best or possibly the very worst of the lion. The most stressful relationships will probably be between Leo and Capricorn, or Leo and Pisces.

Little lions are born leaders, and you’ll hear them roar from far away. Just as the sun is the center of the universe, Leo kids believe they are also.  From birth, they crave attention.  They will gather other and organize the pack, initiate ideas, and need to be the center of attention. Envision this and you will have a good idea what’s in store for you as the parent of a Leo child.

Leos are quite bossy by nature, and you will have to find a way to help them channel this without squashing it, or you will hurt their feelings. Teach them the difference between being bossy and being a leader. How to shine by example rather than letting them dictate what should and should not be done. Little lions are physically and mentally strong and without fear. They are talented, and can also be seen as showoffs, which should be gently discouraged while teaching them to share the spotlight.

The Leo child is proud and confident. These kiddos love to learn new things, but only when those activities are of interest. Keeping Leo children actively engaged in something they enjoy not only works as a teaching exercise, but also opens an avenue to help them control their temper and frustrations. They would prefer to fall from the monkey bars several times, then admit they can’t do it.  Sometimes a Leo might prefer to just quit rather than admit defeat.  Teach them that it is alright to make mistakes and to learn from them…no matter what the outcome it.  Don’t put all the emphasis on winning because they are naturally wired to compete and be number one. Like all fire signs, the lion can have a temper!

Some Leo cubs can develop a lazy streak. Leo children are generally cheerful and up for fun and laughter…not wanting to miss out, so preferring play to work. As a parent, you have to love and encourage them to see the value in doing things by and for themselves. Appreciate them, pay adequate attention to their interests, and work with them when it comes to learning something new. In return, you will be rewarded with children who are independent, confident, and well-liked by their friends.

Virgo

Virgo is an earth sign, and it shares its ruling planet of Mercury with Gemini.  Virgo is the 6th sign of the zodiac and rules the intestines. Virgo will get along best with all earth signs including Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Pisces is Virgo’s opposite, which means that this sign has the potential to bring out the very best or possibly the very worst of this helper. The signs most likely to be the most frustrating are Aquarius and Aries.

Virgo kids will show signs of being reserved starting from an early age.  They can be very sensitive and prone to feeling insecure and inferior. It will take reinforcement of your love and encouragement to help them develop strong self-esteem early on. Heap on the praise and affection to help them grow their confidence.

A Virgo child will do whatever they can to be helpful. Virgos are born leaders and have the “take charge” attitudes. Encourage them to try new things and allow them to be who they are. You will find they are often early talkers and quick to pick up reading and writing. Be sure to foster and encourage any advanced skills they possess.

Most Virgo children are very clever and will need clear rules that are specific.  No gray areas.  Virgos are quick to find loopholes in rules and may try to charm and/or confuse you with excuses. You may even want to list the rules or directions to avoid future protests before they start.

You can expect Virgo children to be neat and clean. They are naturally orderly, intelligent, and very precocious. They accept responsibility easily, especially if it’s something that they want to do. They will happily offer to help clean the house with you or to keep their area/bedroom neat and tidy. They will need order that makes sense to them, and if you move their toys or bedroom around this might cause them distress.  Have them help you with the process or sorting, cleaning or rearranging of their space.

Virgo kids are naturally curious and very intellectual. Because of their take-charge attitude, with siblings and friends this can turn into being bossy and critical. They will need guidance early on how best to approach their peers with a gentle attitude to help decrease any hurt feelings that can occur.  It is natural for them to want to control or take over, and they will need to work on listening to the thoughts and opinions of others. To learn to be a friend not a boss.

Libra

Libra is an air sign, and it is ruled by Venus (which it shares with Taurus).  Libra is the 7th sign of the zodiac and rules kidneys and the adrenal glands.  It is most compatible with other air signs including Aquarius and Gemini. It is opposite in the zodiac from Aries, which means that this sign has the potential to bring out the very best or possibly the very worst of the scales… and that it likely to bring out both the best and the worst in both signs.

Libra babies and children of both genders are usually naturally beautiful. Their faces are expressive and there is a natural grace about them.  They will often appear more mature than they really are.

Libras children can be indecisive.  They may have a hard time making up their minds on just what they really want. They will be slow to choose what they want because to them, how can they choose, knowing both options are good.  Be supportive of their indecisiveness.  It will take longer for them to make a decision, but they need time to decide.  Rushing will cause undue stress for everyone.

For a Libra, time management is an issue.  If you try to get them to hurry, you simply exasperate the issue.  This in turn will create more frustration for the both of you and perhaps fuel the fire for an outburst from them. Libras have a tendency to not appreciate or understand, how long it takes to complete a task. Time gets away from them. Work with them to help foster an understanding that being on time in important.  Time management will be a valuable lesson for them to learn and master.

Just like the scales that symbolize Libra, Libra children need balance, harmony and fairness in all areas of their lives. If they are overwhelmed in anyway, the frustration starts to build. They don’t want to make a mistake; they are frightened of making the wrong choice.  Allow them some down time to think things through, and you’ll be well rewarded.

Libra children are generous to a fault and will share happily all that they have. They have such a giving nature and desire to please, that they feel the need to nurture and care for others. You will need to guide them towards not being so giving that they are left with nothing.

Libra children crave connection. They are social and possess great conversational skills. They have the ability to see both sides of the story and will often play “devil’s advocate.” They need to be around others to play and socialize.  Activities can include anything from park dates to sports or dance.  When younger, you will need to discuss the topic of “stranger danger” because they see everyone as a potential friend.  They need to learn to tune in to their internal voice that will guide them to safe situations. As they get older, encourage them to volunteer and put to use their amazing networking people skills.

Introduce these kiddos at an early age to everything that is balanced and beautiful…as they mature, you will find that you have raised a child who in turn is balanced and beautiful inside and out.

Scorpio

Scorpio is a water sign and is ruled by the planet Pluto and Mars. Scorpio is the 8th sign of the zodiac and rules genitals.  As a general rule, they will get along with all water signs, Pisces and Cancer included. It is the opposite sign of Taurus in the zodiac, which means that this sign has the potential to bring out the very best or possibly the very worst of the scorpion.

Scorpio children crave privacy and need plenty of alone time.  They will tend to keep all of their thoughts, feelings and emotions hidden inside. Wanting secrecy and uncovering secrets are their specialty.  They will uncover any and all family secrets or anything that you try to hide.  That being said, they are very good “secret keepers.”  If you share something with them, you can rest assured that your secrets are safe with them.

Scorpios are strong willed and do not like to admit when they are intimidated. They can be brave and bold, but behind the façade lies their fears and insecurities.  They will need reassurance from you that everything is good.  They don’t like to play mind games, nor do they want you to.  They want what they want, and they want it for a reason. They are not afraid of the hidden or unknown. Superficiality doesn’t interest them, and as they grow older, they will simply drop anything, or anyone, who isn’t real and authentic.

Overall, they are not very compromising, so if you’ve got a battle of wills on your hands, be prepared for a standoff! They like to push the boundaries. They are curious and inquisitive. They want to see how things work, so they will take them apart and put them back together again. This mindset applies to people, too. They are highly competitive and will play to win.  They will always try their best.  They have a fantastic memory and sometimes a vindictive streak. You’ll have to be loving but firm, teaching them compassion, understanding and respect, and especially how to forgive and let go of grudges.

Scorpio children are honest and loyal and can sometimes be a bit tactless. They will be mortified if they have hurt someone’s feelings accidentally, but they will also learn how they can use their words as weapons…and won’t be afraid to do so. They are brash, bold and daring, and at the same time also intense and very deep. You will rarely know what a Scorpio is feeling unless they choose to reveal it to you. They make the most loyal of friends.

Scorpios are very perceptive, intuitive and affectionate. They will pick up on other people’s feelings and be tuned in when things seem “off.” They have magnetic, intriguing personalities that cannot help but attract friends. To strangers, a Scorpio child may seem impolite or indifferent…this is due to their aloofness and intense energy.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius is a fire sign ruled by the planet Jupiter.  Sagittarius is the 9th sign of the zodiac and rules the thighs.  They will get along best with other archers, Aries and Leo. They are opposite Gemini on the zodiac, which means that this sign has the potential to bring out the very best or possibly the very worst of the little Sag.

Sagittarius children love to be on the move. They are gregarious and happy by nature, and it takes a lot to get them down. They tend to be restless and independent.  They will grow up to travel the world, but for now, as soon as their little legs move, they will crawl, walk and be on the go.  Plan on lots of movement with frequent walks in the neighborhood, trips in the car or stroller.  They will have an adventurous spirit and soon you will be chasing after them everywhere.

They adore people AND need their own space.  They will greet everyone they meet, enjoying any attention others show to them. They are outgoing and full of energy. They need an audience; they need to be in the middle of things surrounded by their peers.  They will most likely have a group of friends, rather than just one best friend.  They want to be with people and maintain their independence.  As independent spirits, your Sag like their freedom and space.

Sagittarius children are blessed with an amazing imagination.  They are capable of dreaming up the most exaggerated stories and prone to daydreams.  Because of this, the line between fantasy and reality can often become blurred.  Their minds are so active and curious, and you’ll have to have a reason for everything you do and say, because you are more often than not, going to be met with their response of…. “Why.” If something is difficult to grasp, it is alright to cushion the blow, but if you lie to them to protect them from something, they will lose all respect for you when the truth is exposed.

Sagittarius children are rarely bored.  They will find someone or something and make their own entertainment. They are fascinated by different cultures, food and philosophies from an early age. Allow them to explore whenever possible. The more freedom and encouragement you give these kiddos to analyze who they are, the happier they will be.

Capricorn

Capricorn is an earth sign that is ruled by the planet Saturn. Capricorn is the 10th sign of the zodiac and rules the knees. It will be most compatible with the earth signs, which include Taurus and Virgo. Its zodiac opposite is Cancer, which means that this sign has the potential to bring out the very best or possibly the very worst of the goat.

Capricorn children are old souls. There is something about your child that will make them appear older and more mature than their peers, even from birth.  They are strong willed and determined even as a baby. They know what they want, and they find the most effective way to get it. This can make them come across as intimidating or imposing at times.  If your Capricorn child throws a temper tantrum, you can believe that there is something truly amiss. Don’t dismiss it, check into the reason.

You will also soon know what these children like and what they don’t like. They will find all kinds of ways to show their disdain for what you have done, and then they will patiently wait for you to fix it. They don’t take no for an answer and will keep trying different approaches until you finally give in and say yes or find something else of equal value. Caps are wonderful barterers.

Capricorn children are very serious. They do have a sense of humor…one that is fun and down to earth, but they only let it show with people they trust, and even then, only when the more responsible tasks have been taken care of. They are typically not party people and may shy away from large crowds.  They are studious in school and unlikely to be distracted by others goofing around. They will have fun, but only at appropriate times.

Capricorns are generally very practical. Their idea of enjoyment is usually some kind of creative play, and they’ll lead the other children in these games just as a teacher will lead a class. They’re responsible and studious, naturally respectful and caring, and don’t let anything get them down for long.

Capricorn kiddos are often very focused and goal oriented.  Give them a new task or chore to complete and keep them busy with games, activities and books.  They often have the ability to quickly make a decision that will keep them happy.  This is a great trait that makes them a born leader. They may seem like they are all business, but deep down they are providers.  They will want to always look after the needs of their family and loved ones.

Aquarius

Aquarius is an air sign, and it is ruled by the modern rulership of Uranus and traditional rulership of Saturn.  Aquarius is the 11th sign of the zodiac and rules the legs and blood. It will get along best with all of the air signs which include Gemini and Libra. It’s opposite in the zodiac is Leo, which means that this sign has the potential to bring out the very best or possibly the very worst of the relationships.

When raising an Aquarius child, expect the unexpected.  They will keep you on your toes.  They are filled with energy, emotion and intelligence. They are confusing and charming, sensitive and aloof, impulsive and reserved, and have the ability to be many different and contradicting emotions all at once.

They like to always be on the go, meeting new people and trying new things.  They enjoy being active. Aquarius children require a sense of independence and personal freedom. If you try to tell them what to think, they’ll choose a different outlook simply to defy you. They will not give up until things go their way.  This stubbornness can be hard to witness and can sometimes work against them.  The lessons they learn on their own will be much more valuable than what can be shown.

Aquarians are very empathetic.  Whatever you need, be it a hug or compliment, they will be the first ones to provide it to you.  They have the ability to know how you are feeling without having to tell them.  Emotions are frequently challenging for Aquarius kids, because they rely more on what they see and on the logic of a situation, rather than what they feel.

Aquarians are quick learners. They want to figure out how things work.  They can be so busy exploring things they may seem to lack common sense at times. These children are incredibly intellectual.  Be sure to make sure they are challenged academically, or they may begin to rely on charm instead of using their intelligence.

Aquarius children would rather read a good book than be out on the sports field, and even if they are physically active, there’s some kind of logical reason behind it. They are Empathic and deep taking everything seriously and spend a lot of time in their heads thinking.

Pisces

Pisces is the last of the water signs, and is ruled by traditional Neptune and modern is Jupiter.  Neptune is the 12th sign of the zodiac and rules our feet. They will gets along with all the water signs (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio). Their opposite sign is Virgo, which means that this sign has the potential to bring out the very best or possibly the very worst of the fish.

Pisces children might seem somewhat different from other kiddos.  This is because they are very imaginative.  They find it so easy to slip into make believe. They are at home in their imagination, where TV characters become real, and where their toys come to life. Pisces children are natural storytellers. They are charming and alluring. The have an uncanny ability of drawing you into their reality.

Pisces children are kind and passionate.  Once they find something they love, they will be laser focused on it. They may have a favorite toy or blankie that they absolutely have to have and need to carry it everywhere.  They are gentle souls that often only see the best in people. This leads to quickly trusting everyone that is around them.  This can be difficult when they come in contact with people who do not have their best interest at heart or who mean to do them harm.  They will need to learn what healthy boundaries are and how to set them and use them.

The easiest way to get these children to cooperate is to enter that world with them. Use their favorite symbolism or toys and create a magical world in which whatever you need to do happens, and not only will they go along with you, but they will do so willingly. Be aware that Pisces do tend to do things when they’re ready, though, and not necessarily on your time.

As creative as Pisces children are, they often lack confidence. Make sure you pay them attention and give them lots of praise. Tune in to when they want to socialize and when they want to be off on their own, because these kids need their down time away from others and in their own fanciful environment.

Pisces children are quick to internalize their feelings.  They are super-sensitive, and often sense atmospheres or tension long before anyone else does. They possess idealism, so much so, that it can cause them to expect unrealistic results.  More like a fairy tale. They know that just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not real. Because they believe so much in other people, when things don’t go well, it’s hard for them to blame anyone but themselves.  Encourage them to talk about their feelings and help them to reason things out. As an outlet, encourage self-expression through some kind of a creative art or music pastime

Conclusion

It is my hope that you will see that even though every child is going to be unique in their own way…that there are some traits that are innate to every Sun and Rising sign, and children of that sign will express those traits at some point. The more you can learn about your child through the study of his or her chart, the more you can support your child to living up to their fullest potential.
